Getting started with your Minecraft server

Purchasing a server from Lilypad was the right choice! This article should cover the basics of setting up and configuring your Minecraft server, so that you and your community can start playing in a world straight away.

You should've received an email with instructions on setting up your account with our game panel, available at panel.lilypad.gg – just click the link in the email to get started, and once inside the control panel, select your server that you just created. If your server isn't online already, you can start it by pressing the Start button in the top-right corner of the Console page in the panel.

We automatically enable a username-based whitelist/allowlist on all servers created with us, so please run whitelist add <player> in the console to add your account (and others') to the list, replacing with your in-game username. If you're running a private server, we recommend keeping it enabled for security reasons otherwise random players can join your server, however you can run whitelist off in the console to disable it (this allows anyone with your server's IP to connect to your server!)

Upgrade your server with Lilypad

We understand your server's playerbase can fluctuate a lot, and so we allow you to easily scale your Minecraft server by upgrading or downgrading at any time. This won't have any impact on your current progress and will be applied the next time you restart your server, following purchase.

Head to your Servers page on the billing panel, or click here.
Select the server which you wish to upgrade and double check you've selected the right one. Now press Upgrade/Downgrade in the left sidebar.

You should now be able to select a new plan for your server. Finally, proceed with the checkout process for your new plan, and your server will be automatically adjusted once payment has been received. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, and thanks for your purchase!

What does Lilypad's infrastructure look like?

Although we keep many details of our backend infrastructure confidential in order to protect our customers, there is certainly some information we're happy to share! Let's start with a look into some of the security practices used by our team to protect the infrastructure which powers Lilypad:

Mandatory two-factor authentication/2FA (or passkey auth where possible) on all external services that Lilypad uses, such as Crisp (our live chat & helpdesk software), Google Workspace and GitHub
Any staff with access to sensitive/customer information have up-to-date antivirus software on their computers
We ensure staff only have access to the data necessary for their job, and make use of tools like Cloudflare Zero Trust to enable this
No Lilypad staff store customer data locally, and if needed, only do so temporarily and with strictly the data necessary for the intended purpose

What about security measures we take on systems that we run?

We operate under an assume-breach mentality, which ensures we take a proactive approach when it comes to keeping our systems safe
We use SSH keys instead of password-based authentication on all Linux-powered nodes operated by Lilypad
We use the latest version of the operating system installed on all our nodes, which is renowned for its stability and security
Sensitive information stored on our systems, like clients' passwords, are heavily encrypted

Question 4

Pre-generate your world with Chunky

Accepted Answer

Chunky is a great mod/plugin that makes it easy to "pre-generate" parts of your world, helping your server's performance as it no longer has to use resources to generate chunks while your players are online. Instead, you can run Chunky before you release your server to your players, hopefully resulting in less lag in the future caused by chunk generation.

Install Chunky on your server, following the instructions to install a mod/plugin from here. We recommend downloading it from Modrinth.
Head to your server's Console and run the chunky world [world] command, where the [world] is the name of the world you'd like to pre-generate. On a Paper-based server, the world names are world for the overworld, world_nether for the Nether and world_the_end for the End. On Fabric or Forge however, these would instead be called overworld, the_nether or the_end respectively. For example, running chunky world overworld would select the overworld on a Fabric server.
Pick the radius of blocks which you'd like to pre-generate. Common ones picked by small server owners are 10k, 15k or 20k blocks. A 10k-radius world require running the chunky radius 10000 command, for example, which would generate 10,000 blocks in each direction from 0,0.

Upload plugins/mods to your Minecraft server

It's simple to upload plugins or mods to your Minecraft server – we've outlined the easiest way to do so below.

||| We now have a Plugin Installer which you can use to add plugins to your server at the touch of a button. Just make sure your server's set to a supported version (e.g. Pufferfish/Purpur/Paper) and click on the Plugins tab in the sidebar.

Head to our game panel at panel.lilypad.gg and select your server.
Select the Files button in the sidebar to navigate to the File Manager, and then click on the plugins folder if you wish to upload a plugin, or the mods folder to upload a mod.

Drag and drop the files you wish to upload into your browser window. They should automatically upload and you can monitor the progress from the panel.

Restart your server and the new plugins/mods should be loaded in. You can confirm plugins have loaded in by running the plugins command in your server console. If running mods, you should be able to add the same mod to your client and be able to use its features while playing on your server.

Add Simple Voice Chat to your Minecraft server

Simple Voice Chat is a great tool, allowing you to communicate with players in-game via proximity voice chat (meaning players are louder the closer they are to you). This can make your Minecraft experience even more fun, and you can see it in use in numerous videos like TommyInnit's YouTuber Hunger Games event.

We've made it super easy to install and the quickest way to do so is outlined below.

Visit the Simple Voice Chat page on Modrinth and download the corresponding version. If you're running a Pufferfish/Paper server, you'll want the "Bukkit" plugin file, or if you're running Fabric/Forge, the "Fabric" or "Forge" mod file.

Head to our game panel at panel.lilypad.gg and select your server.
Select the Files button in the sidebar, and then click on the plugins folder if you're uploading the plugin version, or the mods folder to upload the mod.

Drag and drop the Simple Voice Chat file into your browser window to allow it to upload.
