Getting started with your Minecraft server

Purchasing a server from Lilypad was the right choice! This article should cover the basics of setting up and configuring your Minecraft server, so that you and your community can start playing in a world straight away.

You should've received an email with instructions on setting up your account with our game panel, available at panel.lilypad.gg – just click the link in the email to get started, and once inside the control panel, select your server that you just created. If your server isn't online already, you can start it by pressing the Start button in the top-right corner of the Console page in the panel.

We automatically enable a username-based whitelist/allowlist on all servers created with us, so please run whitelist add <player> in the console to add your account (and others') to the list, replacing with your in-game username. If you're running a private server, we recommend keeping it enabled for security reasons otherwise random players can join your server, however you can run whitelist off in the console to disable it (this allows anyone with your server's IP to connect to your server!)

Upload mods/plugins to your Minecraft server

It's simple to upload mods or plugins to your Minecraft server – we've outlined the easiest way to do so below.

||| If you're running a non-modded server, we now have a Plugin Installer which you can use to add plugins to your server at the touch of a button. Just make sure your server's set to a supported version (likely Paper or Pufferfish/Purpur) and click on the Plugins tab in the sidebar.

Head to our game panel at panel.lilypad.gg and select your server.
Select the Files button in the sidebar to navigate to the File Manager, and then click on the mods folder to upload a mod, or the plugins folder to upload a plugin.

Drag and drop the files you wish to upload into your browser window. They should automatically upload and you can monitor the progress from the panel.

Restart your server and the new mods or plugins should be loaded in. You can confirm plugins have loaded in by running the plugins command in your server console. If running mods, you should be able to add the same mod to your client and be able to use its features while playing on your server.

Upgrade your server with Lilypad

We understand your server's playerbase can fluctuate a lot, and so we allow you to easily scale your Minecraft server by upgrading or downgrading at any time. This won't have any impact on your current progress/saved data and will be applied the next time you restart your server, following purchase.

Head to your Servers page on the billing panel, or click here.
Select the server which you wish to upgrade and double check you've selected the right one. Now press Upgrade/Downgrade in the left sidebar.

You should now be able to select a new plan for your server. Finally, proceed with the checkout process for your new plan, and your server will be automatically adjusted once payment has been received. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, and thanks for your purchase!

Question 4

Set up automatic restarts for your Minecraft server

If you run an intensively modded server, it can be useful to schedule regular restarts for your server. This can improve stability by clearing out the RAM, along with offering a number of other benefits.

Head to our game panel at panel.lilypad.gg and select your server.
Select the Settings button in the sidebar and set your server's time zone to whichever is easiest for you to understand.
Go to the Schedules tab, then press the Create Schedule button.
Set the name of the schedule to something like "Daily restart" then select the Every day at 06:00 button. This will pre-fill the values below with the ones required to restart your server at 6AM each day, in the time zone set via the Settings tab. You can change the number in the Hour field to a different time if you wish, like 0 if you wish to restart every day at midnight.

| You can now set a custom time zone for your server which will change the times displayed in the Console and when Schedules are run — just go to the Settings tab and click the dropdown at the bottom to select one.

Press Create Schedule at the bottom, then select the schedule you just created followed by the New Task button.
Click on the Action dropdown and select Send power action, followed by Restart the server under the Payload dropdown

Access your server’s files with SFTP

Although we offer a powerful web-based file manager and editor, available via the Files tab of your panel, some customers may prefer to access their server via SFTP. This works in the same way to FTP access on other providers, and will require software like the below to work:

WinSCP (feature-packed but only for Windows)
FileZilla (the classic, still works great)

Head to our game panel at panel.lilypad.gg and select your server.
Select the Settings button in the sidebar, where you can view your SFTP details:

Your game panel password may differ from your billing password that you set when creating your server with Lilypad. If in doubt, log out of the panel via the button in the bottom-left, then follow the Forgot password? process which will ensure you have a password set that can be used for SFTP.

Create a new server/connection in your SFTP client of choice, such as CyberDuck, and enter the details:

Ensure the "Protocol" is set to SFTP, not FTP or FTPS which are different protocols
The "Server" or "Host" will be the "Server address" from your control panel, although you may have to enter the port 2023 into a separate field if it doesn't automatically populate
The "Username"

Diagnosing lag on your Minecraft server

I HATE LAG!!!

Don't we all? Luckily, Lilypad provides the tools and support you need to quickly diagnose and fix the most common causes of lag. Unluckily, we're taking money from your bank account every month. Checkmate.

| While some statistics may lead you to believe your server is lagging, it's important to check if you're actually experiencing lag in-game. If you're not, then there is probably nothing to worry about.

||| Diagnosing lag can be confusing sometimes. If you need any help throughout the process, don't hesitate to contact us via live chat or our Discord server.

First of all, consider the type of lag you're experiencing.

Is the lag only affecting you, and not other players in the game? There's probably some network issues affecting your connection to the server. Try installing and running Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 tool. It'll reroute your internet connection and we see it quite often magically fixing connection issues that players may (rarely) experience on our customers' servers.
Are you getting frame drops in-game, or is your FPS very low? This won't be something on the server side. Try increasing the amount of RAM allocated to your Minecraft client, or install a mod like Entity Culling to reduce the number of entities rendered by your client.
